I am really worried about whether music has completely changed in the last two months but hopefully I haven't completely lost touch with music. Or at the very least, you can tune in for some quaint music from the yesteryears. I've been in a Tuesday afternoon time slot for x number of years where 1 < x < 7, but I'm not sure exactly how long i've been here as it is not a habit of mine to catalog these sort of things. I plan on doing two more shows afterwords since I still have about 50 of my favourite songs to play but they will most likely be as fill-ins in other time slots. I'll let you know ahead of time when these shows are but most likely, it will be easier for you to simply download the podcasts. The invitation to come by my last show at CFRC still stands and I'll let you know as soon as I know when that will be. Thanks to those who have already sent some stories from the show. Wish you could be here but I'll pass your stories to everyone without any kind of editorializing from myself.

Tuesday afternoons won't be the same without this little two-hour break in the day where I could cast away the worries of the day and do something that I enjoy so much. For those of you who have tuned in on Tuesdays, thank you so very much for sharing these afternoons and for making them worthwhile. Hopefully we can do it again sometime in the near future.

Cheers,

Tuan

August 22 2006: Podcast

This Tuesday's show podcast (aka the August 22 podcast)

Podcasts The one voice that serves as a beacon to all things pop culture the way that Hunter S. Thompson (immortalized in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and in Duke, a character in Doonesbury) did in the drugs'n'other vices era of the 60's and 70's. He may be right. Or he may be wrong. Personally, I can't think of any voices that I listen for to guide me in the jungle of pop culture. I've got my contemporary authors like Malcolm Gladwell and Steven Johnston but they deal with issues that ultimately are related to societal phenomenas. To tell you the truth, my best source of pop culture discussions is you. And perhaps that's the point, with pop culture being so readily accessible these days, there is such a great emergence of different voices with different tastes that it is unlikely to be the One Voice that will tell it like it is. More than ever, there is no common culture that can be considered as Pop.

If you have certain authors and sources that you regularly enjoy, send them my way and i'll share them with the rest of the listeners.

Also as a reminder, the Wolfe Island Music Festival is this weekend (Friday and Saturday), featuring the Constantines, The Hidden Cameras, Holy Firetruck and Great Lake Swimmers among others. I'm not sure if I have a ticket to give away this time. I did last week and may have one today too. I'm just trying to say that you should listen without getting your hopes up, that's all.

Cheers,

Tuan

August 1, 2006: Playlist

1. Breaking the ice - Mojave 3
2. In love with a felling - Babyshambles
3. Gatekeeper - Feist
4. Let's get out of this country - Camera Obscura
5. All in good time - Ron Sexsmith
6. nothing in my way - Keane
7. Ships the majestic suffix - Danielson
8. The avalanche - Sufjan Stevens
9. Steady as she goes - The Raconteurs
10. Everywhere - Bran Van 3000
11. Put your records on - Corinne Bailey Rae
12. Haven't got a clue - The Flaming lips
13. House of Gold - Andy Stochansky
14. Sweetest Decline - Beth Orton
15. Heavy metal drummer - Wilco
16. On my way - Ben Kweller
17. Baby I - Amy Millan
18. Alive - Imarobot
19. Tribute - Tenacious D
20. Loved on look - The Sadies
21. Energy of Death - Apostle of Hustle
22. God Knows - Mano Diao
23. Taper jeans girl - Kings of Leon
24. Chosen One - The Concretes
25. Soft One - Matt Barber
26. Power out - The Arcade Fire

The Sweet Hereafter August 1 2006: Spiritual despite himself?

Howdy folks,

Last week, I played a request by Andrew named "Did I step On Your Trumpet?" by Danielson, a fun little ditty from the much acclaimed album Ships. I've listened to the song a few times already and really like it. However, I came across an article yesterday about Danielson where he talked about the Christian themes that is infused throught out his music. My first reaction was of course: "What the hel.." Well, maybe not. But little did I know though that by playing this song, I was introducing spiritual content into my usual vacuous and innocuous brand of music. I began to wonder whether I've been playing other music with spritual/religious undertones without having the intellectual wherewithal to make the connection.

Too often, artists get branded with a Christian label and their music is unfairly dismissed. If you know of artists that I've been playing, and therefore I must be enjoying, who have been inspired by religious themes in their music, please let me know. I'd really like to listen to their music with a different perspective.

On another front, I'm submitting my thesis in three days so if you hear the sound of a typewriter on the show, that's the sound of multitasking baby!

Cheers,

Tuan

July 25, 2006: Podcast

This Tuesday's show podcast (aka the July 25 podcast)

Podcasts
July 25 2006 podcast

Ah yes, the Dalhousie-Radio-station-CKDU-audition-podcast that wasn't meant to be.

If the mp3 doesn't work, please download them by clicking on the links under Other Sections.

Just as a reminder, the feed for this site is http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheSweetHereafter

Thanks for listening

July 25, 2006: Playlist

1. Napoleon Says - Phoenix
2. Martell - The Cribbs
3. If you talk too much (my head will explode) - People in Planes
4. Did I step on your trumpet? - Danielson
5. You and I - Graham Coxon
6. Yellow sun - The Raconteurs
7. Sexx laws - Beck
8. Les professionels - Air
9. Hapinness the gondola song - Elliott Smith
10. Skip divided - Thom Yorke
11. Sing a life never lived - Infotourist
12. Skinny Boy - Amy Millan
13. Bottle Rocket - The Go! I mention this only because Amanda Putz who hosts a show called Bandwidth on the station that shall not be named (rhymes with EBC) was also in attendance and I got to meet her. While EBC is not always thought of as a great source of music, Amanda and Grant Lawrence do play great music, CFRC-worthy music in fact and it was neat to meet someone that has a national audience. There aren't that many stars in RadioLand but she's as close as I've ever gotten to meet a radio star. Very nice person but the funny thing is she doesn't look like she sounds. Not that she has a "face fit for radio". Far from it (in case she's reading this) in fact. It was just different from what she sounded, that's all. I've gotten a few "You don't look like what you sound" comments in the past and I still don't know how to react. I welcome any suggestions for replies to that kind of comments.

Okay, no focus on any particular types of music today means I can play some past requests that were put on hiatus because they didn't fit in. One shouldn't spend their lives trying to fit in. Just be yourself, be that song you were meant to be. I already have 5 songs that were suggested or requested and anything others are welcome.

See you in a bit,

Tuan

July 11, 2006: Playlist

1. Retreat I started out at CFRC in 1996, a long, long time ago when every family still gathered around the family radio every evening to spend quality time at home. But unbeknownst to some of you, my first show at the station was actually a French show as part of CFRC's french programming. My initial interest in the station was to keep my french going and they needed some new blood in that department of the station so I joined. Eventually I fell in love with english music, and the fact that there were a few more listeners, but for that first year, I played musique en francais.

So expect a couple of my favourite french songs on the show today, as well as some cover songs I didn't get to last week, including Ryan Adams' cover of Wonderwall which I could only play partially last week.

A tantot,

Tuan

Sweet Hereafter May 23, 2006: Covering its tracks

Hey everyone,

So the latest album to grace the turntables of my mind is Open Season, a collection of remixes of Feist songs. It's the only album full of remixes that I own because I find that these albums are usually hit and miss. Some songs are better than the original, others destroy the songs and even worse, some make you hate the songs that you loved once.

I find that covers (and remixes) fall into three categories depending on how the original was transformed:

1. Sprinkle a hearty dose of beats: This one is the standard approach. Give the song to a beatmaster and let them add some tsi, tsi, tsi...and start nodding along

2. Acoustication: Take an uptembo song with an edge or a beat, and then strip all of that away.

3. All covers that don't fall into category 1 or 2 (sorry, I'm writing this an hour before the show): This involves transforming the song into a style that is different, whether through big bandization, latinization or others

For today's show, I'll be playing examples of all three including some Ryan Adams, Feist, Gary Jules, Suzanne Vega and others.

Feel free to send some suggestions (within the next 45 minutes) and I'll try to get it on air.

See you in a bit,

Tuan

Sweet Hereafter May 16, 2006: Festival hoppin'

Hey superstars,

I'm happy to be back from a two-week academic exile and since science has been my companion in the last two weeks, I've decided that I'll play some songs about science...or that contain the word science in it. The Sweet Hereafter is usually my escape from science!

Also, we'll talk about a group of Canadian artists who've united to set the record straight about what artists feel about the way that record companies are trying to regulate the distribution of music.

As an insider's tip to music festivals of different scales that are coming up this summer:
1. June 24: Skeleton Park Music Festival which is a great way to spend the day with friends and family in a local setting http://skeletonparkmusicfestival.ca
2. August 11-12: Just a short ferry ride away, the Wolfe Island Music festival (August 11-12) promises to be even better than last year's edition despite the lack of melodic singer-songwriter
3. July7 - 16: It might be stretching the definition of blues just a wee bit, but the Ottawa Blues Festival's lineup is phenomenal (http://www.ottawabluesfest.ca/en/) so I'll give you a taste of what to expect.

See you in a bit,

Tuan

Sweet Hereafter May 2, 2006: Cue the summer reruns

Hey everyone,

Quick note: I won't be doing the show for the next two weeks due to academic reasons (science first as they say) so it's summer reruns for a bit. Having DJed a few dances and weddings, I can tell you that perhaps the most difficult part is to leave your a bit of your college hipster DJ tastes behind for the sake of the party. While I had a great night at the Grad Formal (don't ask about the morning after though), I found the DJing left a lot to be desired. While I was very pleasantly surprised to hear such great tracks at Such Great Heights by the Postal Service, Neighbourhood #3 (Power out) and Dead Disco by Metric, the rest of the set left a bit to be desired because there was an apparent lack of familiarity between the crowd and the music, which left the crowd disappointed (and not dancing). DJing a party is different than Djing a radio show because during a radio show, you assume that people have made the effort to tune in or download your podcast because they like what you've played before and trust that you will take them on similar listening pleasures. When DJiing a party, there is very little history between the listeners and the DJ. It is up to you to figure out what they want to hear, not to impose your tastes on them.

And so, when you find a couple slow-dancing to Michael Jackson's Beat It at the end of the night because they were so desparate to slow dance to anything but you had deprived them of that simple pleasure, that is not an example of catering to your crowd. Again, had the great indie tunes that I mentioned above been played alongside more popular songs to serve as catalysts for the party, I would have stopped whatever I was doing, stood up and deliver a slow applause for a masterful performance. The potential was there but alas, I found myself mostly busy talking to others who were uninspired to groove it up, while the rest of the crowd was headed towards the exit.

Tuan

---------------------

Okay, so for today's show, expect to hear the Subways and definitely some Silver Hearts of whom I have heard nothing but praise (hi Justin and Melodie) for their live show at the Grad Club (there were twenty of them in the band!), and sweet remixes from the Feist Machine who just put out an album of remixes called "Open Season". Yeah, even more excuses for me to play Feist!

Cheerio,
Tuan

April 18, 2006

1. It's a wonderful life - Sparklehorse
2. Gold Day - Sparklehorse with Nina Persson
3. Lucky - Radiohead
4. Such great heights - The Postal Service
5. Chosen One - The Concretes
6. Once in a while - Sondre Lerche
7. All my little words - The Magnetic Fields
8. Hold on hold on - Neko Case
9. Another Sunny Day - Belle and Sebastian
10. Alive - Ima robot
11. Shine a light - Wolf Parade
12. Looks just like the sun - Broken Social Scene
13. See you on the moon - Great Lake Swimmers
14. A lovely day - Bill Withers
15. Your Ex-Lover is dead - Stars
16. The Death of Ferdinand de Saussure - Magnetic Fields
17. Blow it out - The Features
18. Pumping on your stereo - Supergrass
19. No Photographs - Harmony Trowbridge
20. Camera shy - Mike O'Neill
21. The Man who would be king - The Libertines
22. Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco
23. Grace - Jeff Buckley
24. Hands in my pocket - Jim Guthrie

Sweet Hereafter April 18, 2006: Keeping it simple, Smartie-Pants!

Hey everyone,

The great thing about having setup the podcast is that it holds me to a certain degree of accountability. Because these shows are now floating out there on the internet, accessible to you anytime of the day, any day of the week, I feel like I should provide some substance to the podcast, something to give it matter and a raison d'etre. And it's been fun the last few weeks with band interviews or with thematic content and discussions. But this week, I say f...iretruck it. No themes for today or guest appearances. The sun is shining outside and I just want to stare out the window with some music in the background to frame my mood or set my daydreaming in all sorts of direction.

So I warn you, today's set will, at times, make you want to quit whatever you're doing, go outside and find a tree to lie under with a strand of hay in your mouth; and at other times, it will make you want to throw the frisbee around or play catch while waiting for that slab of meat or corn of cob to finish cooking on the grill.

I can't wait. Hope it's bright and sunny wherever you are in the world

See you at 3PM - 5 PM

Tuan

April 11, 2006

Yesterday's show including the interview with Infotourist

Podcasts
Entire show

If the mp3 doesn't work, please download them by clicking on the links under Other Sections.

Just as a reminder, the feed for this site is http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheSweetHereafter

Thanks for listening wherever you are in the world,

Tuan

Sweet Hereafter April 11, 2006: Making you smarter, one song at a time

Hey kids,

First off, I've added a few superstars to the mailing list so if you're getting this for the first time, congratulations on your entry to this highly exclusive group. Basically, this list serves as a reminder to tune in to the show from 3 to 5 and to give a preview of what's going to be on the show, assuming I've thought that far ahead.

Queen's undergraduate students are currently entering their final exam period before the promises of a summer of freedom and enlightenment. I can remember back when I was an undergrad, an x number of years ago, studying ardently and having to forego listening to music fearing that the background music would interfere with the process of getting smarter for exams. But what is the relation between music and mental capability? Some of you might have heard of a study reported a few years back where listening to classical music, Mozart to be precise, was purported to increase intelligence. While this study may explain why sales of Mozart spike around this time of the year, the so-called Mozart effect on intelligence has since been frequently contested. However, we'll talk about why biologically and psychologically listening to classical music may indeed increase your performace at final exams. We'll rely on scientific evidence and on Malcolm Gladwell for such a discussion.

Thus, we'll try to play smart music. Not nerd music, smart music. Songs from artists noted for the intelligence of their lyrics. Artists such as The Weakerthans, The Shins, Belle and Sebastion, and Sarah Slean will grace our airwaves.

So whether, you're assiduously studying/writing a post-structural essay/crunching numbers/designing websites/writing computer code/doing some serious fundraising or simply chilling, the show will strive to make you better at what you're doing.

And remember that if you miss the show today, our show's podcast is available on this site within a day of broadcast.

Cheerio,

Tuan

April 4, 2006: Podcast

Yesterday's show including the interview with Infotourist

Podcasts
Entire show

If the mp3 doesn't work, please download them by clicking on the links under Other Sections.

Just as a reminder, the feed for this site is http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheSweetHereafter

Thanks for listening wherever you are in the world,

Tuan

Sweet Hereafter April 4, 2006: Buck65 was a good idea, Pamela, not so, and, introducing Infotourist

Hey everyone,

It'll be our pleasure today to have local band Infotourist drop by and chat. While not easy to peg down, their sound can be described as crossing the spectrum from evocative Radiohead to Propagandhi meets Spiritualized. They'll be playing at the upcoming AMS Food Bank Fundraiser this Thursday April 6 at Clark Hall Pub alongside the likes of Lacklustre, Reno's Hitmen and Team Fence. For more information about this event, please visit http://www.myams.org/mambo/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=71

Along with the fundraiser, we'll talk about their current album "Selected Case Studies", the challenges that every up and coming bands face, and alternative forms of music distribution. They also want to talk about curling but we'll see about that. If you would like more information on the band or to sample some of the songs that appears on "Selected Case Studies", check out http://www.infotourist.org

I've got a couple of requests to play today, including one for Sarah Harmer. Also expect some Soundtrack of our Lives, Broken Social Scene, Stars and Michael Buble. Just kidding about that last one. No, it wasn't the cute blonde in the ad nor that it was American Eagle Outfitters, it was the song that they were using. A female voice singing a poppy tune that I thought I recognized and I thought I was indifferent to, but in this commercial setting, sounded appealing to me. I racked my brain the rest of the evening and the tune stayed in my head Monday morning on the drive to work till I was able to get access to Google and figure out what song it was. It was a tune called Nth Degree by a band named Morningwood (yes, I am aware of the connotations of that name) and I remember seeing the video on The Wedge, Much Music's weekly one-hour slot dedicated to non-top 40 stuff. I also remembered that I was indeed indifferent to it the first time I saw it, but now the song is stuck in my head simply because of that commercial.

So today on the show, I will play songs that have put in the mainstream consciousness because they appeared in a short ad. You'll hear songs like "Don't wait too long" by Madeleine Peyroux, "Jerk it out" by the Caesars, "This is the day" by The The and of course, "Hands in my pocket" by Jim Guthrie (sorry Linds). If you have any suggestions in terms of other songs that you discovered through commercial spots, please send them my way before 2:30 and I'll try to get them on the show.

By the way, the podcasting venture seems to be working. I've had a few people tell me that they were able to get the podcasts using either Juice or iTunes. Thanks for your feedback. I may be able to get both halves the show together so you will only have to download one .mp3 file.

See you in a bit (3-5PM or at your own convenience),

Tuan

March 21 2006: Podcasts Deux

My Podcast retriever program Juice (from iPodder.org) only retrieved the first half of the show so I'm making the assumption that I need to put both halves in two different posts so here goes. Podcasting, to the uninitiated, is simply a .mp3 audio or video web feed for anyone to download or suscribe. What distinguishes podcasts from regular downloads is that they are published in such a manner that specialized software can automatically retrieve them when a new "show" is available using RSS or Atom syndication.

I finally found some storage place (thanks Noah for the tip) and the show's website has a link to the last show (i.e. which will be the show airing today!) so you can just click on that once the show is done and I've uploaded it to the aforementioned storage space. Where I'm still iffy about is the syndication part. I tested it yesterday on a test podcast and it worked but it was a bit mysterious how it worked and I myself was very surprised to find that it works. In any case, you can find podcast retrieval software easily on the web. The one I'm using right now is Juice from iPodder.org only because it was the first link that came up on Google.

Whichever program you are using, add a new feed and type in http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheSweetHereafter Theoretically, the program should get the podcast when I've uploaded it and syndicated it, so close your eyes, pinch your nose and jump into the warm waters of Podcasting won't you. Or just click on the link on the website. I will be simply amazed if this works. Simply amazed

Okay, gotta go talk brain science to a whole lotta kids. I'd rather pick my nose. 2) Wait a firetruckin' minute! Where's Grey's Anatomy?

My interest in the Oscars has waned over the years as the number of nominated movies that I have actually seen has decreased. And it doesn't help whatsoever that the list of nominees for Original Song seems to be rather uninspiring the last few years. Not that the Academy has always shown itself to be a harbinger of good musical taste. A lot of their winning songs have come from Disney movies or from Celine Dion's discography. But once in a while however, one could be treated to seeing an Elliott Smith or an Aimee Mann perform their songs and get some time to shine under the spotlight. And that, that was worth watching the show for.

So expect to hear some songs from soundtracks today including Elliott Smith and Aimee Mann as well as some Shins and who knows what else.

And if that's not worth tuning in, I found the full version of that Capital One commercial jingle, you know, the one with gentleman walking around with other gentlemen with a hand in their pockets. I think the song is called "Hands in My Pocket".

TICKET GIVEAWAY
-----------------------------

We gots tickets for:

Cuff The Duke at the Elixir this Thursday
Uncut, and Ladies and Gentleman at the Grad Club this Friday

Cheerio,

Tuan

The Sweet Hereafter Feb. 28, 2006: Leaping into the future...later this week

Hey superstars,

I was hoping to spice up this reminder to listen to our modest yet excellent station in an hour with a big announcement that this show is now available for podcasting, but I've been running into a few technical glitches. A friend of mine offered to help me on this task, but I felt like donning my Do-It-Yourself Home Depot apron and get'er done. Well, I guess I'm more technically incompetent than I thought, but mama Bui didn't raise no quitter so get'er done is what I will do, just not today. So that just means you'll have to cherish this show for what it is, an ephemeral slice of time that we get to share, but only in that instantaneous space in time when it happens. Unless you were like me as a kid, with my tape recorder and microphone, recording every episode of Transformers and falling asleep to the soothing voice of Optimus Prime and Megatron.

Just to get some music content in this email: The album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not by the Arctic Monkeys might not be able to match the ridiculous hype that has been surrounding it, it is still a very clever and great sounding album.

See you in a bit

Tuan

The Sweet Hereafter Feb. 21, 2006: Uncaging the music nerd in all of us

Hey everyone,

So as part of my daily existence as an academic, I get to read articles on the visual cortex of the giant blowfly and the electrosensory computations of the weakly electric fish. However, just a week ago, while perusing the Uber-journal named Science, I ran across an article looking at music markets. My interest was piqued. The researchers in question created artificial music markets composed of a group of unreleased music and studied how songs became popular, or not popular. And the interesting thing is, it varied. Some of the songs were really popular in some of the markets but not others, while some of the other songs were busts in some markets but relative successes in other markets. Thus, assuming that the makeup of each market was essentially the same, there doesn't seem to be any easy way to determine whether a song will be a success or not.

The article can be found at http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/reprint/296/5571/1302?maxtoshow=&HITS=10&hits=10&RESULTFORMAT=&fulltext=Duncan+watts&searchid=1140713916908_9714&FIRSTINDEX=0&journalcode=sci.pdf

I'll go into more details in the show. Or you can just turn down the volume for a couple minutes when you hear me talk about it, and turn it back up and your musical enjoyment should be unhindered.

Tuan

Sweet Hereafter February 14: Putting the saccharine in Sweet

Yes kids, every 6 years, that most time-honoured of holiday, St. Valentine's Day falls on the Sweet Hereafter's broadcast day and the Sweet Hereafter gets to put the saccharine in Sweet. Today's playlist will be dedicated to that most noble of sentiment embodied by this day.

Some of you may hate today's show and it may cause you to upchuck. If that is the case, please come back next week. Maybe I'll play some anti-romance songs then.

Some of you will love today's playlist. Some of you may really, really love it. For those of you who fall in the latter case, please consider Tuan as a possible name for your newborn. You may have heard by now but the Pledge Drive was a kickin' success. We exceeded our goals by at least 60%. Big, big thanks to all those of you who've made pledges by calling in or through the online form. While I may not be around next year, i'm happy to know that we've made a big step in ensuring that Kingston still has a great station to tune into.

Now onto some music talk. I'll be playing some Arctic Monkeys on the show. Why this is worth mentioning is because the Arctic Monkeys have ridden an amazing wave of hype in Great Britain to become the fastest selling artists beating out the likes of Oasis with their freshman release, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not. Having, euh, hmm, sampled some of the tracks from that album, I can safely say that it is good brit-pop music a la Libertines, Kaiser Chiefs, Franz Ferdinand and early Oasis. Nice to listen to, lots of hook-ladden songs, high energy, a bit of freshness, overall, very enjoyable. Is it going to be the best british album of all time as suggested by their record sales? Unlikely. In fact, I would like to put forth the guess that they will not be remembered as the best British band of all time, simply because they've peaked too early with their first release.

I have a theory (with co-authorship from my friend Jerome) that for a band to have long-lasting careers, it is the second album that is most critical. A lot of bands put out brilliant first albums but seem to fizzle afterwards, never capturing the magic of the first one. Hot Hot Heat and the Strokes immediately come to mind. The reason is that the first album contains inspired music that was created through an inspiration that was given the span of years to brew and to be nurtured. Putting out a greater second album is tough because there is more pressure to retain or improve on commercial success, and to grow musically and lyrically. This pressure increases with the success of the first album. Thus, bands that have put out a decent promising first album but really delivered on that promise on their second albums such as Coldplay and the White Stripes, well, we know where their position is in the music world don't we. So with that in mind, I truly hope that acts like the Arcade Fire, Feist and the Wolf Parade can top themselves on their next release and cement their places in the music consciousness.

Expect to hear today

Arctic Monkeys and songs from bands' first and second albums

Giveways

Tickets to see the ASUS Sunday Movie Night presentation of Pride and Prejudice featuring Keira Nightley. Hmm, I'm not inclined to see this movie but you and a friend might be so drop me a call (613-533-2372 or 613-533-CFRC).

Tuan

Hey everyone,

As mentioned last week, CFRC is in the middle of its funding drive, with the goal of raising $5000 to help offset the loss of the $48,000 that the Alma Mater Society used to provide us. My show has a target to raise, which I've already raised by myself (thanks VISA!), but if you want to pitch in I would be greatly appreciative.

There are basically two ways to donate:

1. Through the web at https://www.givetoqueens.ca/forms/form.php and make sure that you write "CFRC" in the Clubs field so that CFRC receives your donations

2. Call in at 533-CFRC (2372). You can make a prepledge or pledge using your credit card

3. Visit the pledge table at one of our CFRC Co-sponsored Events (see http://www.cfrc.ca)

What do you get for your pledge?

If you give through the web, you can get a tax receipt
If you call in or drop by the station, you can get a gift or a tax receipt (but not both).

Gifts eh? What are we talking about, Pez dispensers?

I wish. I love Pez. But we do have a lot of goodies to offer, more than I expected. The list is at http://www.cfrc.ca/funding_drive_gifts.html

Highlights include (minimum $15 donation):
-Beck's Guerolito CD
-Sarah Harmer's I'm a Mountain CD
-The Most Serene Republic Cinematographer CD
-The Soundtrack of our lives CD
-Cuff the Duke Self Titled CD
-The Caesars Paper Tigers CD
-In-Flight Safety Vacation Land CD
-Andy Stochansky's 100 CD
-Brendan Benson's The Alternative to Love CD
-Emm Gryner's Songs of Love and Death CD
-Bloc Party's Silent Alarm CD
-The Kaiser Cheifs Employment CD

and this email is getting too long so check out the rest of the list will ya?

Just remember though that these gifts can only be obtained if you make a pledge by phoning and picking up your gift at the station but you can ask the operator to give the gift to me and I'll get it to you

Expect to hear today:

Controller.controller
OK GO
Arctic Monkeys
Feist
Stars
In-Flight Safety
Kingston Fog
Cardigans
The Weakerthans
Brendan Benson
Sarah Harmer
Kaiser Chiefs
The Constantines
The Mark Inside
The Soundtrack of Our Lives

Thanks for listening

Tuan

http://www.cfrc.ca

Sweet Hereafter: We'll give you A widow for one year

Hey everyone,

So you may have heard this from other shows or read about it in the newspaper but the Sweet Hereafter is starting a pledge drive this Friday (Jan 27.) till February 5th. The reason why we've adopted this PBS strategy is because we will be losing $48,000 of AMS funding come next year. This is a sizeable chunk of change and by no means are we hoping to raise all that in a week. We just want some positive reinforcement. Anyways, yes, my show has been given the goal of raising x amount of money, which I will be writing a cheque for anyways so it is not up to you faithful listeners to help me raise that money. I've already done it myself. If you do plan on giving our little station some money, all I ask is that you do it during my show next week (Friday Jan 31st) just because it makes me look better.

Oh, and about our offer of a widow for one year, my friend Dave told me a story where a few years ago, PBS was offering John Irving's novel "A Widow for One Year" with every pledge. Of course, the announcers at PBS, not being the most comedically astute individuals on TV, announced throughout their pledge drive that for every pledge that they received, "PBS will send you a widow for one year for every pledge". I personally think that widows have better things to do than being pawns of PBS and thought it was pretty crass of PBS to think that this would be enticing to their listeners.

Expect to hear on the show this week

Sigur Ros
Feist
The Features
The Stooges
Mark Mothersbaugh
The Pernice Brothers
In-Flight Safety
The Shins
Snow Patrol
Keane
some dead air (just kidding, I hope)

Songs to put on your iPod shuffle in preparation for 12 hours in an airport/airplane

Huddle Formation - The Go! While there were a lot of excellent albums this year, there were no albums that stood head and shoulders above everyone else. The more I think about it though, the more I'm convinced that the best album of the year for me is...drum roll please...

Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes

This album truly demonstrates their sonic and storytelling range from taking advantage of Jack White's recent dabblings in various Blues/Country projects to a Vaudeville takeoff to a calypso sounding hommage to Renee Zelwegger to a slightly Satanic opening track. Yet, despite the disparity of the sound, the album remains cohesive and more importantly, listenable. In the midst of an explosion of bands that have matured over the last 2 years, the White Stripes remain the band that is most intriguing and visionary. Besides, I love saying "Get Behind Me Satan" on the air and truly wished we had one of those special-effects machine that could alter my voice to make it sound truly Beelzebubesque.

Note: Funeral by The Arcade Fire would have been numero uno but it was a late 2004 release so technically...

Here are my top 10 albums (other than Get Behind Me Satan):

1. You Can Have It So Much Better - Franz Ferdinand
2. Live it out - Metric
3. Thunder, Lightning, Strike - The Go! Team
4. Nashville - Josh Rouse
5. Idols of Exile - Jason Collett
6. Twin Cinema - The New Pornographers
7. The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers (would have been higher if they let me burn their disc that I purchased onto my computer in .mp3 format rather than useless .wma format. Let that be a warning to you music artists, this kind of trickery will notch you down a couple of points on my highly influential list)
8. I'm a Mountain - Sarah Harmer
9. Wish I - Jem
10. Back to Bedlam - James Blunt

Note 2: Had I listened to Wolf Parade and Kanye West in greater frequency, they might have be in the list. There is just so many albums one can buy (and I don't mean "download" for all you cynics)!

Let me know what your own top 10 was. I love lists and I'd love to hear what impressed you in the last year so that I can add them to the rotation.

New Year's resolutions

Hi music superstars,

With the new year's just behind us, here are some Sweet Hereafter New Year's resolutions:

1. I will not accidentally play Ads and Show promos while music is playing
2. For the sake of the environment, I will reduce the amount of dead air.
3. I will play more Tom Jones
4. I will realize that there are other artists than Sarah Harmer (apparently)
4a. I will realize that there are some artists that are not singer-songwriters with a melodic flair
5. I will fill at least 54.3% of all requests I get
6. I won't beg my fellow programmers to play my promos every 15 minutes on their show
7. I won't play my promos every 15 minutes on their show
8. I won't string along my listeners with promises of giveaways that I give away only in the last 5 minutes of my show
9. I won't sell out
10. I'll keep the website better updated (is that even English?)

Cheerio

Tuan

The Sweet Hereafter on CFRC 101.9

Hey everyone,

This is the blog for the Sweet Hereafter, my radio show on CFRC 101.9, Kingston's Campus and Community radio station at Queen's University.

You'll find on this blog weekly newsletters previewing upcoming shows, commentaries about music and pop culture, and hopefully soon enough, podcasts of the show.

Actually, the whole raison d'etre of this blog was to put up the podcasts, but while I'm at it, might as well make it a forum for the show.

Thanks for dropping by for a visit.

Cheerio,

Tuan
